Travel to Kenya: Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is located in the Rift Valley Province in Kenya. Its area is more than 390 square kilometers and it's close to Tanzania's border. It was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1991.

One of the images of this park par excellence, is Mount Kilimanjaro, which can be seen at dawn on days without fog. That is perhaps the symbol of the park, along with his most famous animal: the elephant.

No doubt the Amboseli National Park is the best place to monitor these giant pachyderms. Moving in herds across the savannah, their structure and hierarchy is evident: Females first, followed by males. They are not aggressive unless disturbed, and cross the park every day. Their biggest handicap is their sense of sight, but his their hearing is highly developed.

For me, there is no greater satisfaction than being able to find dozens of families of elephants with their young. Even coming face to face with this huge mammal watching us suspiciously. It was a once lifetime experience.

Amboseli is a Masai area, so it's very common to see the Masai tribes in the park and its surroundings, this ethnic villages and Masai women and children caring for their animals and collecting water. Do not forget to visit some family of this tribe. It's a very enriching experience and you will have the chance to see first-hand their culture and way of life.

When to go

The temperature varies between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius depending on the season. If you decide to travel to Amboseli, keep in mind that there are two rainy seasons: one with higher rainfall in March and April, and another with regular rainfall between November and December. The summer months are the best time to visit the park.

Get directions

Amboseli National Park is located 240 kilometers from Nairobi. My advice is to drive to Amboseli. That way, you’ll be able to see the country firsthand. While you could go by plane, the park has a small airstrip.

Access to park

There are two entrances to the park: Meshanani and Olkelunyiet. In order to get a pass you will have to pay the entrance fee, which ranges from 50-80 US dollars, depending if you plan to see more than one park, or just Amboseli.

Undoubtedly, it was one of my favorite safaris. The images will always remain etched in my mind. Its size, its colors and its wildlife.
